ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
On Monday mornings during our class meeting students are given a few minutes to share about their weekend. One student brought up that his family participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I asked the student if he knew why people were doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and he did a little. Ironically, my family also participated in the ice bucket challenge that same weekend. My students asked to see my video, because who doesn’t want to see their teacher get ice cold water dumped over their head? I showed them my video. During lunch, two girls in my class asked the sign language interpreter what it meant that I did the ice bucket challenge in memory of my brother. She explained that meant my brother had passed away. Our school raised money for the ALS Association for two weeks. The teachers kicked off the fundraiser by completing the ice bucket challenge. After two weeks we collected the money and donated $407.62 to the ALS Association, Iowa Chapter! I am amazed by how much our school raised, and am beyond thankful for such a caring group of students. On the last Friday of the fundraiser my students, with parent permission, completed the ice bucket challenge. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my family and the ALS Association – Mrs. O’Connor!
